ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ADOPTS RESOLUTION COMMENDING DISTINGUISHED FINALIST PARIS DAVIS 2007 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS

The Alabama Department of Education's Board of Education adopted the following resolution:

WHEREAS, Distinguished Finalist Paris Davis, a freshman at Shades Valley High School in the Jefferson County School System, is among a select group of young Americans recognized among the nation's youth volunteers for 2007 in the 12th Annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and

WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created in 1995, in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, to emphasize the importance our nation places on service to others, and to encourage young Americans of all backgrounds to contribute to their communities; and

WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are America's largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteerism; and

WHEREAS, Paris raised $7,000 to open an Internet Caf� to give kids in her small community a safe and convenient place to access computers and socialize; and

WHEREAS, as a Distinguished Finalist, Paris receives an engraved bronze medallion for demonstrating an impressive spirit of volunteerism:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Paris Davis, from Shades Valley High School in the Jefferson County School System, for earning Distinguished Finalist status in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.
